I'm so done!!! Glad I did this exercise and now know what patrons are talking about when asked about 'wikis', etc. Don't know if this the best way to learn for me. I like to do things in groups - learn sooo much more that way. I feel I missed out on a few points and didn't have enough time to explore all my venues.

Week 10 - Thing 22 & 23 - Podcasts & Netlibrary

Now I know what Podcast means. Enjoyed Common Craft and was very easy to follow.
Don't think I'd use Netlibrary much. I enjoy curling up with a book, the smell of the paper, etc. My mother was a master book binder. I appreciate the work going into a well 'put together' book.

Week 10 : Thing 21 YouTube

I've always had lots of fun on YouTube. I love music videos and always enjoy what the spot across the pond has to offer. The Brits are so creative. It's too much fun and hours and hours can be wasted on this little puppy.

Interesting and fun to see what other staff members post as their favourite books, vacation spots, etc. Some of the best books I've read have been recommended by fellow staff members.

Why haven't I used this little baby before??? What a great tool from a personal point of view. We could have definitely used this in our "Game On" contest - maybe in 2010??? Great way for library staff to keep in touch with each other rather than opening email, after email.....

Week 7 - Thing 16 : Technorati & Web 2.0 & Library 2.0

I fiddled around with Technorati and don't think I'd use it much. Also takes up way too much of my time searching, etc. - not that 'friendly'. I'd definitely go to Google search as my first choice. Good to know about it though.
I certainly don’t agree with most of what Rick Anderson professes in his iceberg article. Library collections “…a thing of the past” is not always true in all collections. Just ask the thousands of patrons who walk through these doors every week and walk back out with books in published form, on paper with that ‘book smell’ wafting up their nostrils. There can be no other form for them – nor do they want it.
Into a new world of librarianship by Michael Stephens moves to a more positive view of librarians and their focus on planning and recognizing the techno-needs of the library and its patrons and not clutching on to ‘the next best thing’.
Patrons using our services without the need for extensive training is a glorious dream – so wake up and do it! Having easy access to our information is imperative to the well being of staff and patrons. If patrons take up more and more of our time trying to find the services that they need, then are we farther ahead?

Have heard of Delicious before and did a little exploration. Great idea although it would take some time to set up but might persue this more in the future.

I love LibraryThing and could get quite hooked. If I was a librarian I’d use it more. Most of my greatest book sources come from the people I work with.

Some very smart and inventive persons have taken great works of literature and condensed them into 140 characters! Now they've written a book and I'm sure will make millions. Why didn't I think of this???

WEEK 5 : Thingy 10 RSS & Newsreaders

Sooooooo easy. I had a great time using google reader. You can really get hooked on this. It was also easy to find feeds -- all in one location. I also used http://technorati.com/. It was very well organized and easy to use. Great not having 10 tabs open at once. What a great way to keep up with all the 'stuff' that is important to one in their newsy or everyday life! Now I don't have to listen to CFRB anymore --- hehehehe. My father always made us listen during dinner hour. He was a great teacher but we somehow lost him during our meal times as a family.

WEEK 3; Thingy 8

I bought my sister a GPS for Christmas. I'm a map girl myself and will always be. I love unfolding the map, the smell of the old paper (usually the map has been in the trunk of my car for a while), and the anticipation of finding my destination - magic.

Here's my tekkie info about GPS:
GPS stands for "global positioning system". It uses satellite signals coming from orbit to determine its position.
Routing unfamiliar territories is the primary reason to use your GPS device. You probably already know the best way to work and you can probably do it in your sleep, at least as long as you are taking your regular route.
If you don't, you'll have less need of a GPS receiver. That being said, those people who buy global positioning system technologies often say they wouldn't be able to live without them, now that they know what they were missing all those years. You will find even a casual driver will find a good use for their GPS devices, because they will always know the quickest way from one place to the next (assuming they aren't in an outlying area that isn't fully mapped yet).
Otherwise, people who like technology or buying gadgets are going to have to buy a GPS for their car. Even if you're just finding your way to the nearest Tim Horton, a GPS transceiver is a handy gadget to have.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

I went to hear (and see) Madama Butterfly last week at the Opera Centre in TO. What a magnificent performance! I always wanted to be on stage singing my heart out but alas nerves kept me from becoming famous. Goals - easy to set but not always accomplished - oh well. I've survived - explored other music avenues and am happy for those. I may not be Maria Callas - but then who is!

I listened to the tutorial - 7 1/2 Habits... The easiest one for me is #7 - Teach others....okay...okay...so I'm not the most patient teacher in the world but I find I always learn something or reinforce a point. We all have to start at the 'very beginning'. My hardest habit is #3 - to view problems as challenges. It's easy for me to do so when it involves someone else but I don't have the same patience.
